2014 Sandown Cup Final Field and Barrier Draw

November 12th, 2014

A talented but less-than capacity field of 12 stayers has been confirmed for Saturday’s Listed Sandown Cup (3200m), highlighted by the inclusion of several of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival’s standout performers.

Running a gallant race in defeat in the headlining 2014 Melbourne Cup last time out on November 4th, trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have confirmed Unchain My Heart in the 2014 Sandown Cup final field.

Claiming a commendable total of ten wins and a further thirteen minor places from her 59 competitive appearances at the races so far, Unchain My Heart is a two-time winner over the Sandown Cup distance having taken out the two most recent editions of the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington.

Quickly building to the task this time in, the Al Maher mare ran third in a minor over 2000m and fourth in the Craig Opie Cup (2500m) before once again finishing just off the pace when third in the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) on September 27th.

Having contested each of the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) leading into the Melbourne Cup, Unchain My Heart is primed for a return to the winner’s circle and more than a chance of success in the 2014 Sandown Cup from the ideal barrier 5.

Charged with overcoming the wide and reasonably awkward barrier 12, Like A Carousel took out the Listed Harry White Classic this year and has continued to impress on his way to the 2014 Sandown Cup.

Claiming two wins and a further eight minors from his 23 competitive appearances on course to date, Like A Carousel finished fifth in the lead-up to the Harry White Classic, and has since run third in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and sixth in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m).

Without doubt the big winner at Wednesday’s Sandown Cup barrier draw, Massiyn will leave from gate 1 on Saturday and will be further boosted by jockey Nick Hall taking the ride.

Securing two wins and a further five minor places from his 15 appearances at the races so far, Massiyn finished tenth in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on October 11th, and has progressed to fourth amongst classy competition in the City Jeep Handicap (2040m) and second in the Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m) most recently.

Unlucky to be balloted out of Melbourne Cup contention when perched in position 25 in the order of entry, Shoreham is offered a great chance of consolation success in the Sandown Cup from barrier 2 this weekend.

The stable star for trainer Saab Hasan, Shoreham is yet to hit peak condition this time in, but has found competitive form in finishing sixth in the Geelong Cup and seventh in the Lexus Stakes most recently.
